Millions of Vehicles Are Not E20 Ready #E20Fuel #India #CarTips
About this video
E20 fuel is becoming more common, but are most petrol vehicles actually ready for it?
In this video, we examine E20 fuel compatibility and explain why it remains a concern for millions of vehicle owners.
A petrol vehicle in India typically has a registration lifespan of 15 years. After that, it must either be re-registered (where permitted) or removed under the applicable vehicle scrappage policy.
The challenge is that most petrol cars and motorcycles sold before 2023 were not designed for E20 fuel. Even today, millions of older vehicles on the road were originally built for E10 or lower ethanol blends.
Imported vehicles account for only a small share (around 3–5%) of the overall vehicle market, so the discussion is primarily about domestically sold vehicles.
According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), more than 250 million new vehicles were sold between 2011 and 2023. Not all of these vehicles are E20 compatible, with petrol motorcycles and petrol cars making up the largest share. This means that only a fraction of the petrol vehicles sold during this period are fully compatible with E20 fuel.
