Inside North Korea's Hidden Economy #NorthKorea #Survival
About this video
How has North Korea managed to survive decades of international sanctions without its economy completely collapsing?
Despite some of the toughest sanctions in the world, North Korea continues to maintain economic activity through a combination of trade, strategic partnerships, military cooperation, cyber operations, and domestic production.
First, China remains North Korea’s most important economic partner. In 2025, trade between China and North Korea reportedly increased by around 25% to nearly $2.7 billion, with essential goods and materials moving between the two countries.
Second, North Korea’s relationship with Russia has strengthened dramatically since the Russia–Ukraine war began. North Korea has provided Russia with ammunition, weapons and military personnel, while receiving economic and strategic benefits in return.
Third, cyber operations and cryptocurrency theft have become another source of foreign currency. UN assessments have linked North Korean cyber operations to major cryptocurrency thefts, with billions of dollars reportedly targeted or stolen over recent years.
But sanctions are only as effective as their enforcement. North Korea has continued maintaining economic relationships with countries including China and Russia while developing domestic production and finding alternative ways to generate revenue.
According to South Korean estimates, North Korea's economy grew by around 3.5% in 2025, highlighting how the country's economy has adapted despite international pressure.
So, rather than completely stopping North Korea's economy, sanctions have pushed the country toward alternative trade networks, strategic partnerships, cybercrime and greater economic self-reliance.
But how sustainable is this model—and how long can North Korea continue to withstand international economic pressure?
